Archery coaching in the UK with Patrick Huston

Coaching from the British number one

I'm a two-time Olympian, three-time world champion and British number one in recurve. I coach recurve, barebow and longbow archers one-to-one, run group days for clubs, and give seminars for coaches and archers.

How I teach

Practical tools that put points on your scoresheet

Every session gives you something you can take to the range and measure. I coach the whole archer: the shot, the body that carries it, the data that shows it's working, and the head that has to deliver it under pressure. These are the tools I use with every archer I coach, and the ones I use myself.

Centre your group fast

Most archers leave points on the boss because their group sits off-centre for too long. We work out your clicks per ring at each distance, so the first arrows of a distance tell you exactly how far to move the sight.

You should have your group centered by, realistically, arrow four.

Shoot a high eight at 70 metres with 13 clicks a ring, and you know it's about 33 clicks. No guessing, no wasted end.

Sight marks as a band

Your sight mark isn't one number. It moves with the slope, the wind and the temperature. Recording it every time builds a window you can trust, so you start each distance close to the middle.

Rather than your sight mark is 107 for 70, your sight mark will vary between 105 and 112.

A shot built on structure

Archery is a mental game, but most of what holds archers back is physical. We build a relaxed bow hand, a body that carries the load, and a shot you can repeat when you're tired.

You can teach a 540 shooter to have really great control of his mind. He's not going to become a 590 shooter.

Bow training that fits your life

Strength and control come from short, regular bow training, not marathon sessions. With an elbow sling you can train at home, with the bow strung in the kitchen.

Twenty to thirty minutes of bow training a session, done consistently, and you will be shooting well.

Shooting under pressure

When it matters, almost every archer tries harder, and trying harder is what breaks the shot. We build a shot that survives the extra effort, and a routine for the walk back to the line.

I'm just over and over and I'm saying I win sets, I win matches.

That's what I say to myself walking back to the shooting line in a match. Your performance follows your self-image, so we train that too.

Wind as an opportunity

Windy days reward the archer with a plan. We work on reading gusts and lulls, when to shoot, and aiming off so your group drifts across the middle instead of sitting on one side.

You have to see it as a positive. It's an opportunity to get you more points.

Test your kit with data

Equipment changes are tested, not guessed. Make one change, plot the groups, and decide from the evidence whether it's better or worse.

When I swapped from a dot to an open ring sight pin at 50 metres, my scores there went from around 305 to 324 almost overnight. The right kit for you can be different at each distance.

Coaching by bow style

Recurve, barebow and longbow

The things that make a shot work are the same whatever you shoot: posture, a relaxed bow hand, back tension, a clean release and a calm head. Each bow style then has its own aiming and equipment questions.

Recurve coaching

Clicker and expansion, sight marks and clicks per ring, tuning, and the WA and Portsmouth rounds. My own discipline at international level.

Recurve coaching

Barebow coaching

A repeatable anchor and release, aiming with string walking, face walking or gaps, and the structure that keeps a barebow shot steady.

Barebow coaching

Longbow coaching

Draw, posture and a clean loose with a traditional bow, consistent aiming without a sight, and getting the most from imperial and clout rounds.

Longbow coaching

Based in Shropshire. I coach in Shropshire, Shrewsbury, Telford, the West Midlands and across the UK.
